Ideal weight formulas

The calculator uses six formulas and shows their average:

  • Lorentz – women: height - 100 - (height - 150) ÷ 2; men: height - 100 - (height - 150) ÷ 4,
  • Broca (modified) – women: (height - 100) × 0.85; men: (height - 100) × 0.9,
  • Devine – women: 45.5 kg, men: 50 kg, plus 2.3 kg for every inch (2.54 cm) above 152.4 cm,
  • Robinson – women: 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch; men: 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch above 152.4 cm,
  • Miller – women: 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch; men: 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch above 152.4 cm,
  • Hamwi – women: 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per inch; men: 48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch above 152.4 cm.

Enter your height in centimeters. The Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi formulas were developed in the US, so they calculate from 5 feet (152.4 cm) in inches—the calculator converts it for you.

Alongside the formulas, we show the healthy weight range based on BMI (18.5–24.9). This is a broader, more practical reference than a single number.

Ideal weight is a range, not a number

Ideal weight formulas were developed from the 19th century through the 80s of the 20th century, partly to calculate medication doses. They don’t show whether you weigh more because of muscle or body fat, and they don’t account for body frame.

That’s why it’s not worth aiming for a result down to the kilogram. A more sensible approach is to:

  • look at the range – a weight within the healthy BMI range is good news, even if it differs from the formulas’ average,
  • measure your waist – a waist circumference less than half your height is a simple sign that you don’t have too much fat around your abdomen,
  • check your body fat – you can do this with the body fat calculator and a measuring tape.

If you want to get closer to a healthy weight, start with the calorie deficit calculator – it will show you how much to eat and roughly when you might reach your goal.

FAQs

How do you calculate ideal weight?
The Lorentz formula is the most popular in Poland: for women, height - 100 - (height - 150) ÷ 2; for men, height - 100 - (height - 150) ÷ 4. At 170 cm, the result is 60 kg for women and 65 kg for men.
Which ideal weight formula is best?
None is perfect. They were developed using data from several decades ago and don’t account for muscle or body frame. That’s why the calculator shows the average of six formulas and the BMI range, which better reflects the fact that a healthy weight is a range, not a single number.
What should you weigh at 165 cm tall?
A healthy BMI at 165 cm corresponds to a weight of about 50.4–67.8 kg. The ideal weight formulas give an average of about 57 kg for women and about 61 kg for men.
Does ideal weight depend on age?
The formulas don’t take age into account. Recommendations for older adults can be a little different, and muscle mass matters more than the number on the scale. If you’re unsure, it’s worth talking to a doctor.
Which is a better measure of body shape: ideal weight or BMI?
Both indicators look only at height and weight. Waist circumference and body fat percentage can tell you more—you can calculate it with the body fat calculator.
Can fit people weigh more?
Yes. Formulas and BMI don’t distinguish muscle from fat, so someone with a lot of muscle may weigh more than the calculator suggests and still be in great shape.
