How to calculate BMI
BMI, or body mass index, is calculated as follows: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared.
Example: 70 kg and 175 cm → 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 70 ÷ 3.06 = 22.9. This is in the healthy range.
The calculator does this for you and shows right away which range you fall into and what the healthy weight range is for your height.
BMI chart according to WHO
| BMI | Category |
|---|---|
| below 18.5 | underweight |

| 25-29.9 | overweight |
| 30-34.9 | class I obesity |
| 35-39.9 | class II obesity |
| 40 and above | class III obesity |
These ranges apply to adults. For children and teens, BMI is assessed using growth charts that account for age and sex, so this adult calculator isn't suitable.

When can BMI be misleading?
BMI is a quick and simple measure, but it doesn't show what your body is made up of. It can be misleading if:
- you have a lot of muscle - someone who strength trains may be classified as “overweight” according to BMI despite having a low body fat level,
- you're older - muscle mass decreases with age, so a healthy BMI can hide excess body fat,
- you're pregnant - during pregnancy, your pre-pregnancy BMI and your doctor's recommendations are what matter,
- it's a child or teen - growth charts are used in these cases.
Waist circumference is a useful additional measure. According to WHO, the risk of obesity-related diseases increases above about 80 cm for women and 94 cm for men, and rises considerably above 88 cm and 102 cm, respectively. You can also use body measurements to calculate your body fat percentage with the body fat calculator, and check an estimated weight for your height with the ideal weight calculator.
What should you do with your result?
- BMI in the healthy range? Great. If you want to maintain your weight, check your daily calorie needs.
- Overweight or obesity? Take it one step at a time, without crash diets. Start with a moderate calorie deficit, which you can calculate with the calorie deficit calculator. Losing just 5-10% of your body weight already significantly improves many health markers.
- Underweight? Consider talking to a doctor or dietitian, especially if your weight is dropping for no clear reason.
In EatSee, you can log your weight and see its trend and forecast, making it easier to tell whether you're moving in the right direction. Read more about how to lose weight without crash dieting in our article about calorie deficits.
